This spring Brixham residents and visitors will benefit from £750,000 of public realm improvements to the harbourside.
Torbay Council and Brixham Town Council have been working on ideas that will make Brixham harbour an even more attractive and vibrant place.
Emerging ideas include:
- Installing new 600 litre solar smart compacting bins, that will prevent the bin from overflowing and reduce the amount of street clutter.
- Mounting approximately 250 metres of LED festoon lighting around the harbour.
- Replacing seating and benches and adding seasonal feature planting such as colourful hanging baskets.
- Improving access and public safety around the harbour / fishing port.
- Providing safe launching, landing and mooring facilities for paddleboard and kayak users.
- Improving way finding and directional signage to enhance the visitor experience.
- Repainting the harbour railings, pillars, lamp posts and Quay Market structure.
Until Friday 21 February, residents and businesses, particularly those based in Brixham are encouraged to view the proposals and share any other ideas they may have.
There are several ways that people can view and comment on the proposals over the next three weeks:
The improvements are being funding using £750,000 of government grant funding that Torbay Council secured through the Levelling Up Partnership.
SWISCo will start work on the improvements this spring. Improvement and installation work will be carried out in phases, ensuring it does not impact on spring and early summer events.

A summer full of flowers in Torbay was celebrated at the 2014 Bay Blooms awards at the Riviera Conference Centre at the end of September.
Pride in Brixham were once again singled out for the exceptional standard of their voluntary projects around the town and won:
- First in the Community Project category
- Best Overall award for Brixham
- Special Commendation for Sylvia (member of PIB)
This added to their earlier success in the Britain in Bloom/South West in Bloom Awards where they earned a Gold Award in the pennant class Town to City and a Gold Award plus the Michael McGahey Award in the Exceptional Community Effort category.
Afterwards, Mary Thomson commented “Certificates, medals, 2 cups and a large shield at the moment we are all 10 feet tall. Please pass on our thanks to everyone, who helped with the success Brixham has had with these two Competitions.
“I hope any traders that were reluctant to join in will hear of these achievements and realise that if everyone takes responsibility and pride in their own shop frontages, (a sweep and a bucket of water at the end of the day) not just at the time of the competitions but everyday from now, we could develop a beautiful Brixham which would benefit us all”.

Pride in Brixham is a volunteer group that sets out to help upgrade and maintain the environment in and around Brixham, focussing its efforts on painting and gardening schemes around the harbour, from the Marina Walkway to Oxen Cove.
The group is one of many local groups to benefit from a donation from the Chamber in recognition of the tremendous work they do to enhance the environment for residents and visitors alike.
Mary Thompson of Pride in Brixham said “Pride In Brixham members are very grateful to the Brixham Chamber for recently supporting us with a very kind donation of £1000, which will help us to continue with our various Brixham projects.”
Denis McDowell of the Chamber said “Pride in Brixham are a great asset to the town. They give up their time selflessly to brighten up the environment for all of us to enjoy. The Chamber is proud to support them in their ongoing work. ”
